MG UVA Magnette

Description

The MG UVA Magnette was a specialist recreation of the famous pre-war MG K3 Magnette, produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s by UVA Cars in the United Kingdom. Designed as a high-quality evocation of MG’s 1930s competition cars, the UVA Magnette combined classic styling with more modern mechanical components to deliver vintage character with improved practicality.

The original MG K3 Magnette had achieved considerable racing success in the early 1930s, particularly in endurance events such as the Mille Miglia. The UVA Magnette drew direct inspiration from that model’s appearance, featuring cycle wings, an upright MG-style radiator grille, exposed headlamps and a long bonnet. The proportions closely mirrored the original competition car, preserving the classic pre-war sports car silhouette.

Unlike the 1930s K3, however, the UVA Magnette used contemporary running gear. Most examples were built using mechanical components from later MG models, often the MG Midget or similar donor vehicles. This typically meant a four-cylinder engine, rear-wheel drive and a four-speed manual transmission, offering reliable performance and easier maintenance compared with the highly specialised supercharged six-cylinder units of the original K3.

The chassis and body construction reflected kit car practices of the period. A steel or tubular frame supported lightweight body panels, often made from glass-fibre. This kept weight low and allowed builders to assemble the car either as a factory-built vehicle or from a kit, depending on local regulations and customer preference.

Inside, the UVA Magnette maintained a period-inspired cockpit with simple instrumentation, a wood-rim steering wheel and bucket-style seats. While the styling evoked the 1930s, comfort and usability were improved thanks to more modern mechanical systems and braking components.

The UVA Magnette appealed to enthusiasts who admired the aesthetics and heritage of pre-war MG competition cars but wanted a more accessible and usable alternative. It captured the spirit of MG’s early racing achievements without the complexity or rarity of an original K3.

Today, the MG UVA Magnette is recognised as a well-executed tribute to one of MG’s most famous competition models. While not an original factory MG from the 1930s, it represents the enduring appeal of the Magnette name and the strong influence of MG’s pre-war racing history on later generations of enthusiasts.
