Description

The Mercedes-Benz SL 320 was the six-cylinder cornerstone of the R129 SL range and represented the most balanced expression of Mercedes-Benz’s modern luxury roadster philosophy during the 1990s. Positioned below the V8 and V12 models, the SL 320 combined strong performance, advanced engineering and everyday usability, making it one of the most rational and widely appreciated variants of the R129 generation.

Power came from a 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine, initially in 24-valve form and later as a revised version with improved efficiency and emissions control. Output was approximately 231 horsepower, giving the SL 320 confident acceleration and effortless motorway cruising. The engine was smooth, refined and responsive, offering a noticeably more modern character than earlier six-cylinder SLs. Most cars were fitted with a four-speed automatic transmission, with a five-speed automatic introduced later, both prioritising seamless shifts and relaxed progress rather than sporting aggression.

The R129 platform was one of the most advanced roadster chassis of its era. It featured a very stiff bodyshell, extensive use of high-strength steel, carefully engineered crumple zones and sophisticated safety systems. A defining innovation was the automatically deploying rollover bar, which provided open-top safety without compromising the car’s clean lines. Suspension consisted of double wishbones at the front and a multi-link independent rear suspension, delivering excellent ride comfort, stability and predictable handling.

Disc brakes were fitted on all four wheels, supported by anti-lock braking and traction control systems that enhanced safety and composure in all conditions. These systems worked unobtrusively, reinforcing the SL 320’s reputation as a secure and confidence-inspiring long-distance car.

Styling of the Mercedes-Benz SL 320 followed the restrained, timeless design language of the R129 series. Clean surfaces, balanced proportions and subtle detailing gave the car an understated but authoritative presence. Compared with the V8 and V12 models, the SL 320 was visually discreet, with minimal badging and modest wheel designs, appealing to buyers who valued elegance over display. A power-operated fabric soft top was standard, and many cars were supplied with a removable hardtop, allowing the SL 320 to function as a refined coupé when required.

Inside, the cabin reflected Mercedes-Benz’s focus on quality, safety and long-distance comfort. Materials were of a high standard, with leather upholstery, real wood trim and solid switchgear throughout. Seats were electrically adjustable and supportive, designed for extended journeys rather than aggressive driving. Features such as climate control, electric windows, memory seats and premium audio systems were widely fitted, depending on year and market.

On the road, the Mercedes-Benz SL 320 delivered a refined and composed driving experience. The six-cylinder engine was smooth and quiet at cruising speeds, the suspension absorbed poor road surfaces effectively, and the car felt stable and secure even at high speed. Steering was precise but relaxed, encouraging smooth inputs rather than aggressive driving. While not as forceful as the V8 models, the SL 320 offered more than enough performance for real-world use and felt lighter and more balanced in everyday driving.

The SL 320 appealed to buyers who wanted the engineering sophistication and prestige of the SL range without the added weight, complexity and fuel consumption of the larger engines. It became one of the most popular R129 variants, particularly in European markets, where balance and efficiency were highly valued.

Today, the Mercedes-Benz SL 320 is regarded as one of the most sensible and complete choices in the R129 lineup. Valued for its smooth engine, advanced chassis and timeless design, it represents the SL at its most usable and well-rounded. As a modern classic, the SL 320 offers a compelling blend of performance, comfort and engineering integrity, capturing the essence of Mercedes-Benz luxury roadsters at their most refined.
