Description
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Lang was the long-wheelbase version of the W112 fintail flagship and represented one of the most luxurious and technically advanced saloons Mercedes-Benz offered in the early to mid-1960s. Designed for maximum rear-seat comfort, the “Lang” variant extended the standard 300 SE’s wheelbase to create a more spacious and dignified environment for chauffeured use, placing it just below the large limousine models in the Mercedes-Benz hierarchy.
Power came from the same 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine used in the standard 300 SE, equipped with mechanical fuel injection and producing approximately 160 horsepower. This engine provided smooth, authoritative performance and strong mid-range torque, well suited to the additional weight of the long-wheelbase body. Acceleration was calm rather than brisk, but cruising performance was excellent, particularly on motorways. A four-speed automatic transmission was commonly specified, reinforcing the car’s role as a refined executive or chauffeur-driven saloon, although a manual gearbox was also available.
A defining feature of the 300 SE Lang was its advanced air suspension system, fitted as standard. This system delivered exceptional ride comfort and automatically maintained consistent ride height regardless of passenger load, a crucial advantage for a long-wheelbase luxury car. Combined with the rigid unitary body structure and defined crumple zones, the air suspension gave the 300 SE Lang a level of comfort, stability and composure that was exceptional for its era.
Styling followed the familiar W112 fintail design language, with subtle rear fins and formal, upright proportions. The extended wheelbase was most noticeable in the longer rear doors and more generous rear cabin area, giving the car a stately and authoritative presence. Chrome detailing was slightly more prominent than on lesser fintail models, underlining the car’s flagship status without appearing excessive.
Inside, the cabin was designed with rear passengers firmly in mind. The extended wheelbase allowed for significantly increased legroom, making the rear seats exceptionally comfortable for long journeys. High-quality materials were used throughout, including leather upholstery, polished wood trim and thick carpeting. The interior conveyed a sense of restrained luxury and craftsmanship, with excellent fit and finish. Equipment levels were high for the period, often including features aimed at passenger comfort rather than driver involvement.
On the road, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Lang delivered a smooth, composed and dignified driving experience. The air suspension absorbed road imperfections with ease, and the long wheelbase contributed to excellent straight-line stability. Steering was light and precise for a car of its size, and the overall character encouraged smooth, unhurried driving rather than any form of sportiness.
The 300 SE Lang was aimed primarily at senior executives, government officials and customers who employed chauffeurs. It offered near-limousine comfort in a slightly more compact and manageable form than the larger 600 models, while still showcasing advanced engineering and prestige.
Today, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Lang is regarded as one of the most elegant and technically interesting long-wheelbase saloons of the fintail era. Valued for its fuel-injected engine, pioneering air suspension and generous rear-seat accommodation, it stands as a clear expression of Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to engineering-led luxury and comfort during the 1960s.
