Description

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Cabriolet was the flagship open four-seat car of the W111/W112 fintail era and represented one of the most luxurious and technically advanced convertibles Mercedes-Benz produced during the early to mid-1960s. Positioned above the 220 SE Cabriolet, it combined high performance, advanced suspension technology and exceptional build quality, offering near-limousine standards of comfort in an elegant open-top form.

Power came from a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine equipped with mechanical fuel injection, producing approximately 160 horsepower. This engine delivered smooth, authoritative performance with strong mid-range torque and excellent high-speed cruising ability. Compared with smaller six-cylinder models, the 300 SE Cabriolet offered noticeably stronger acceleration and greater refinement, making it particularly well suited to long-distance touring. A four-speed manual gearbox was standard, with an automatic transmission widely specified to complement the car’s luxury-focused character.

A defining technical feature of the 300 SE Cabriolet was its air suspension system, fitted as standard. This advanced setup provided exceptional ride comfort and automatically maintained consistent ride height regardless of passenger load, an important advantage for a luxury convertible. Combined with extensive body reinforcements required by the absence of a fixed roof, the air suspension contributed to a remarkably smooth and stable ride, setting the 300 SE Cabriolet apart from most contemporaries.

Styling followed the elegant fintail design language but with subtle distinctions that marked the 300 SE as the range-topping model. The rear fins were restrained yet purposeful, and chrome detailing was more generous than on lesser variants, reinforcing the car’s prestige without excess. With the roof raised, the cabriolet retained a formal and balanced appearance, while with the roof lowered it presented a long, dignified silhouette that emphasised elegance over sportiness.

Inside, the cabin was finished to an exceptionally high standard. Seating was wide and deeply cushioned, designed for comfort over long journeys, and all four seats were genuinely usable. Interior materials typically included leather upholstery, polished wood trim and high-quality switchgear, reflecting the car’s flagship status. The dashboard layout was clear and logical, with comprehensive instrumentation and an emphasis on ease of use rather than ornamentation.

On the road, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Cabriolet delivered a calm, refined and authoritative driving experience. The fuel-injected six-cylinder engine provided smooth, flexible power, while the air suspension absorbed road imperfections with remarkable ease. Steering was relatively light for the era and stable at speed, and the car excelled as a long-distance touring convertible rather than a sporting machine. Open-top motoring was relaxed and comfortable, with good wind management for its time.

The 300 SE Cabriolet appealed to affluent private buyers and official users who wanted open-air motoring without sacrificing comfort, safety or prestige. It was significantly more expensive than the saloon and coupé versions and produced in limited numbers, contributing to its exclusivity.

Today, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SE Cabriolet is regarded as one of the finest luxury convertibles of the 1960s. Valued for its fuel-injected engine, pioneering air suspension and outstanding build quality, it stands as a clear example of Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to engineering-led luxury. As a flagship open-top model of its era, the 300 SE Cabriolet remains highly respected and increasingly sought after by collectors.
